The Russian Flag was readopted after the fall of the Soviet Union on December 11, 1993.  The flags use dates back to 1668 when the first Russian naval Ship required a flag to fly.  There are different theories of how the colours were chosen. One is that the builder of the ship was of Dutch origins so they simply adopted the colours of the Dutch flag.  Another theory is that they use the colours on the coat of arms of Moscow.  The flag contains three horizontal bands coloured white, blue and red.
