The flag of Louisiana contains a blue field with the state seal known as the “pelican in her piety”. The seal depicts a mother pelican wounding her breast to feed her young. The flags design has been around since 1912 but was adopted in April 2006 when state legislature passed a bill that required all flags and seals to contain the three drops of blood on the pelican.
The nickname for Louisiana is The Pelican State. The brown pelican is the state bird and appears on Louisiana’s state flag, great seal, the official state painting, and is one of three Louisiana symbols displayed on the U.S. mint’s bicentennial quarter.
