The Portuguese flag was adopted on June 30, 1911.  The flag is a bi-colour flag with a dark green colour on the hoist and a red colour on the fly.  At the center of the division of the colours the flag contains the emblem of the national coat of arms of Portugal.  The green on the flag represents hope and the red symbolizes the blood of those who died serving the nation.
