Genk, Belgium

Belgium

The flag of Belgium was adopted on January 23, 1831 after Belgium gained their independence from the Netherlands. The colors were taken from the coat of arms of the Dukes of Brabant. The flag contains three vertical bands one black, another yellow and the last one red. The colors were used in honor of an older flag with horizontal bands used in a previous revolt in 1789 in what was then the Austrian Netherlands.
