The Japanese civic flag was adopted on February 28, 1870 but was not adopted as the national flag until August 13, 1999. The flag contains a white field with a red disc in the center representing the rising sun. the flag is also known as Hinomaru and was commonly used in the 15th and 16th centuries for military banners in the Sengoku Period.
