The Romanian national flag was adopted on December 27, 1989 but had been in use since 1848.  The red, yellow and blue first appeared on late 16th century royal grants of Michael the brave but also on shields and banners.  The flag has three vertical bands with the colours blue, yellow and red.  Since the 16th century the colours of the flag have represented liberty, justice and fraternity.
