The Surinamese flag was adopted on November 25, 1975.  The flag consist of five horizontal bands coloured green, white and red.  The center red band is larger than the other bands and contains a yellow five pointed star in the center.  The star symbolizes the unity of the major ethnic groups that make up the Surinamese population.  The red colour stands for progress and love.  The green strips represent hope and fertility.  Finally the white strip stands for peace and justice.
