The Italian flag was adopted on January 1, 1948.  The flag contains three vertical bands coloured green, white and red.  The colours on the flag originated from the flag of Milan and the green was added.  The green on the flag represents the country`s green hills and plains. The white represents the snow caps of the Alps and the red symbolizes the bloodshed during the Wars of Italian Independence.
