The flag of Germany was adopted on May 23, 1949. The flag is a tricolor flag with three horizontal band with the colours black, red and gold. The current flag’s colours represent the unity and freedom of the German people after World War II. The colours were originally used on the flag of the Holy Roman Empire. The flag of the Empire was yellow with a black eagle with red claws. During the Napoleonic Wars the Lützow Free Corps, a volunteer unit of thePrussian Army used the colours black, red and gold on their uniforms. After the war theLützow Free Corps adopted the flag with the three equal bands with the colours of black, red and gold for their fraternity. The students of the fraternity came mostly from German states and in October of 1817 during a festival to celebrate the Battle of Leipzig, the colours became a symbol of a unified Germany.
