New York

The flag of New York contains a blue field with the state`s coat of arms in the center. The coat of arms was adopted in 1778 and originally contained a buff colour behind it until it was changed to blue in 1901. On the state’s coat of arms is a depiction of the Hudson River and the nature of the landscape. At the top is an eagle surmounting a world globe. The ships on the shield represent inland and foreign commerce which are important to New York. Holding the shield to the left is Lady Liberty, holding a pole with the Revolutionary imagery of a Phrygian cap. By her foot is a crown representing freedom from Great Britain. To the right of the shield is a blind folded Lady of Justice, with a scale and a sword.

New YorkNew York is nicknamed The Empire State for its national and global significance. The origin of the nickname is unknown – some sources credit George Washington, who referred to New York state in December 1784 as “at present the seat of the Empire.”
