Jackson, Michigan (USA)

The state flag of Michigan was adopted in 1911.  The flag contains a dark blue field with the state’s coat of arms in the center.  On the coat of arms there is a light blue shield with a lake and a man standing on the bank holding a long gun to symbolize peace and the ability to defend his rights.  To the sides holding the shield is a moose and an elk which are two of the animals found in Michigan.  The bald eagle at the very top symbolizes the United States. At the bottom there is a symbol that reads in Latin “Si Quaeris Peninsulam Amoenam Circumspice (If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you).  On the shield the Latin word “Tuebor” (I will defend) appears and above the eagle is a red banner that reads “E Pluribus Unum” (One of many, one) which is a motto of the United States.

The official nickname for Michigan is the Great Lakes State.

Thanx - Red
