The state flag of Mississippi is the only flag in the United States to contain the Battle flag of the Confederacy. The current flag was adopted in 1894. In 2001 there was a proposal to change the flag and have the confederate flag removed from the canton.
The official nickname for Mississippi is The Magnolia State. The magnolia is also the state flower of Mississippi.
