The flag of the Republic of Macedonia was adopted on October 5, 1995. The flag contains a red field with a yellow sun in the center and eight rays extending out from the center to the edges. The colours on the flag have always represented Macedonia since they where the colours on the historical coat of arms of Macedonia. The yellow sun is a depiction of “the new sun of liberty” that is mentioned in the Macedonian national anthem.
