The national flag of Malaysia was adopted on September 16, 1963. The flag consists of 14 red and white strips, a dark blue square in the canton with a crescent and a star. The fourteen red and white strips represent the thirteen states and the government of Malaysia. On the canton the dark blue symbolizes the unity of the people and the crescent on the inside of the square is a symbol of Islam. Next to the crescent is also a yellow fourteen pointed star that also represents the unity of the thirteen states and the federal government of Malaysia. The yellow colour on the crescent is the colour of the Malaysian rulers.
